Kingston, New Hampshire

Set in the southeast corner of the Granite State, Kingston, NH is a quiet, historical town of about 6500 people.  The perfect setting in which to raise a family, Kingston is the epitome of a charming New England town with very little industry and no plans to increase it.  Route 125 skirts the towns center, diverting north/south traffic around the historic homes and grassy field of the towns common area, known locally as The Plains.  Once the site of a yearly carnival, The Plains are now used primarily for picnics, youth sporting events, walking dogs or just laying on blankets staring at the clouds.  The quiet nature of Kingston lends to the peace and tranquility that residents find so important in their little town.

Incorporated in 1694, Kingston became only the fifth town to be established in New Hampshire.  This was made possible by the establishment of peace accords with local natives after the King Williams War.  The towns name comes either from residents who migrated from Kingston, Massachusetts or for King William and his influence in the area at the time.  Farming was the primary livelihood for early Kingston residents, due to the lack of reliable waterpower within the town.  Today, Kingston is mostly a bedroom community with just a few commercial businesses.  A notable inhabitant of the town was Josiah Bartlett, a self-taught medical doctor who eventually went on to much bigger things.  Dr. Bartlett became involved in local politics which soon led him to become colonel of his county's militia, a noted Justice of the Peace, assemblyman, delegate to the Continental Congress, NH State President, first NH State Governor, first to vote for independence from England and second to sign the Declaration of Independence.

Kingston is home to several ponds including Powwow Pond, Great Pond, Greenwood Pond, part of Long Pond and part of Country pond.  Several streams and rivulets connect these bodies of water creating many great swimming fishing, and boating opportunities.  One of the more popular attractions in Kingston is the Kingston State Park, located near the center of town.  Families come from miles around to enjoy the wooded seclusion and sandy beach of this truly beautiful tract of land.  Set on Great Pond just down the road from the local YMCA summer camp, Kingston State Park gives folks a place to escape the summer heat without dealing with the crowds usually found at the more popular beach resort towns of the coast.  Kingston residents celebrate their annual Old Home Day festivities on The Plains as well as several craft fairs and other local gatherings each year.

Kingston, NH is a part of School Administrative Unit # 17, the Sanborn Regional School District.  Kingston has one elementary school, DJ Bakie Elementary, one middle school, the Sanborn Regional Middle School in neighboring Newton, NH, and, new in Fall 2006, the redesigned, new-from-the-ground-up Sanborn Regional High School.  Newton students in grades six through eight attend SRMS with Kingston students, just as Newton students in grades nine through twelve attend the new high school.
