Tuftonboro, New Hampshire Situated just northeast of New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee is the small, unassuming town of Tuftonboro. Tuftonboro has a population of about 2500 people, all of whom enjoy the area’s natural beauty and the peaceful character of this closely-knit community. Settlers made their homes here and the town was named Tuftonboro after Mason. The town was officially granted in 1750 and finally incorporated in 1795. Over the next 70 years, Tuftonboro annexed six islands on Lake Winnipesaukee. While, back in the day, farming and fishing were by far the most common means of support for Tuftonboro residents, the town produced its fair share of skilled craftsmen and woodland traders as well. Today, the town depends heavily on tourism and focuses most of its energy on just that. Lake Winnipesaukee provides a wealth of things to do and attracts crowds from all over New England and as far north as Canada. Whether you enjoy boating, fishing, water skiing, tubing, jet skis or just plain lying around in the sun, New Hampshire’s Great Lake can provide it for you. Tuftonboro is a popular spot in the state for camping with no fewer than nine campgrounds in and immediately around Tuftonboro. The stunning White Mountain National Forest is just minutes up the road with even more camping available there. If you prefer the pounding surf crashing against the rocky coastline, New Hampshire’s 16 miles of sandy beaches and rocky shores is a mere hour’s drive to the south. Tuftonboro’s location makes nearly anywhere in the state easily accessible. Tuftonboro is a part of SAU #49, the Governor Wentworth Regional School District, along with the towns of Brookfield, Effingham, New Durham, Ossipee and Wolfeboro. Tuftonboro operates grades one through six (including kindergarten) at the Tuftonboro Central School but sends all other resident students to the Kingswood Regional Middle and High Schools, both located in Wolfeboro.
