Troy, New Hampshire

Troy is a quiet little town located in the southwestern corner of New Hampshire.  Surrounded by the rolling hills of the Monadnock Region, Troy adds natural beauty and sense of solitude to your everyday life.  Living in this region of the state changes your outlook and slows you down a little in order to appreciate the sights, sounds and smells of the great outdoors.  When you live in Troy, you live better.

Troy began as a part of Marlborough, NH, until it broke off and combined with parts of other surrounding towns to create a village more central to the residents of those towns.  Fitzwilliam, Swanzey and Richmond contributed land to the new town and in 1815 Troy, NH, was born.  The name of “Troy” was suggested by the father of the woman who married Samuel Wilson, a meat-supplier for the troops. Wilson was known by these troops as “Uncle Sam” and since the United States abbreviation of U.S. also fit the bill, so the two became forever intertwined. The Uncle Sam who “wants you” on the war recruitment posters of World War I & II is not an image of Sam Wilson himself, however, as this recruitment technique was developed long after Wilson’s death.  Sam Wilson and his wife moved to Troy, New York, and, at the behest of his father-in-law, the town of Troy, New Hampshire, was so-named.

Always a small town with little industrial or commercial growth, Troy residents supported their families through farming and hunting or by traveling to other towns for work.  Little waterpower dissuaded the construction of mills or factories, so Troy stayed a small, peaceful little town with friendly people and virtually no crime.  Troy is the place to be if you appreciate being alone with your thoughts.

Troy, NH, is about an hour’s drive from the Great North Woods and the White Mountain National Forest, two of New Hampshire’s most spectacular natural attractions.  The Lakes Region of the state, which, of course, includes Lake Winnepesaukee, is only about 45 minutes away from Troy, while the seacoast area, including Hampton Beach and historic Portsmouth, is about an hour and a half.  A trip to historic Boston, MA, and all it’s sights and sounds is also about an hour and a half southeast.  If, while in Troy, you find yourself in need of something only the city can supply, Keene is only 15 minutes north and New Hampshire’s largest city, Manchester, is about forty-five minutes east.

Troy is a member of SAU #38 and is a part of the Monadnock Regional School District.  Troy educates it’s own children from kindergarten age through the sixth grade at the Troy Elementary School but tuitions all the rest of their students to the Monadnock Regional Middle School and the Monadnock Regional High School, both located in nearby Swanzey.

The seclusion offered by the small towns in the southwestern corner of New Hampshire is hard to beat.  Quiet little unassuming towns with nearly no pollution, crime or crowding, they’re just perfect for raising a family or retiring in peace.  If this sounds like heaven to you, you should call Jim Miller Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage at (603) 801-3987.  Jim is here to help you into the home of your dreams by answering your questions, showing you properties YOU want to see and sharing the burden of your new home purchase in an effort to make the transaction as easy as possible.  Trustworthy, honest and friendly, Jim is here just for you.  Call today and start living the New Hampshire dream!
