Strafford, New Hampshire Strafford, New Hampshire is a friendly town with about 4000 residents and plenty of space for more. Not to be confused with Stratford, NH, located in the northernmost region of the state, Strafford can be found in the southeastern corner, nearer to Dover. Strafford is a community with little commercial interests but large tracts of undeveloped land lending to future residential growth. Warm, friendly neighborhoods tucked into heavily wooded, rolling hills allows for a tightly knit community that welcomes new residents with open arms. When you’re in Strafford, you’re home. The area to become Strafford was first settled prior to the American Revolution, though a specific date seems impossible to corroborate. Originally a part of Barrington, the town split off due mostly to the distances residents had to travel to attend town meetings and go to church. Strafford was incorporated in 1820 and was named in honor of Thomas Wentworth, First Earl of Strafford, by the Colonial Governor of New Hampshire, John Wentworth. Not a historically significant focal point in the development of the state, Strafford had a small population of less than 1000 people up to just 35 years ago. The population has since quadrupled as Strafford has become known as a quiet bedroom community with strong family values. With little commercial business, residents must travel to nearby Rochester for their material needs, but that’s a small price to pay for the seclusion offered in the woods of Strafford. If you’re into outdoor activities, such as hiking, swimming, cross-country skiing or mountain biking, Strafford is the place for you. Several ponds and streams allow for fishing, canoeing and swimming while Blue Job Mountain has several miles of hiking and biking trails available for public use. There’s even a fire tower on top that allows you to see for miles and miles in all directions – you’d be hard pressed to find a more beautiful site locally. As mentioned, Rochester, with all the attractions of any respectable city, is but a ten-minute drive east while the state capital of Concord is twenty minutes to the west. With its small population and great location, it’s no wonder why homes on the market in Strafford don’t stay on the market for very long. Strafford, NH is a part of School Administrative Unit #44 and operates its own schools for resident children in kindergarten through grade eight. High school-age children are tuitioned at the Coe-Brown Northwood Academy in neighboring Northwood. Strafford has no current plans to construct its own high school.
