Rochester, New Hampshire Rochester, known locally as the Lilac City, is located in southeastern New Hampshire. With approximately 31,00 residents, Rochester is one of the five most populated cities in the Granite State. A city rich in tradition and history, Rochester continues to grow at a fast pace while keeping an eye on common values shared by those living there. Originally, the town was one of four granted by Massachusetts Governor Samuel Shute while New Hampshire was still a province of that state. Incorporated in 1722, the area wasn’t finally settled until 1728, due mostly to fighting with the Native Americans. Attacks continued for the next twenty years until the Indians succumbed to warfare and/or disease. Primarily a farming community in the beginning, Rochester residents soon began several lumbering businesses and mills until it eventually became known as a mill town, supplying textiles, shoes and grains to the surrounding communities and states. The towns of Farmington and Milton were first a part of Rochester until, in 1798, Farmington became its own town and, in 1802, Milton followed suit. Since agriculture continued to be an important part of the town, the annual Rochester Fair was established in 1875 to celebrate the seasonal harvest and continues the yearly celebration to this day. Rochester was incorporated as a city in 1891. Rochester is convenient to anywhere, due mostly to the well-planned transportation routes designed in and around the city itself. Major highways include routes 125, 202, 11, 108 and the Spaulding Turnpike, all giving fast and easy access into and out of the city. Skyhaven airport serves the Rochester area as well as nearby Pease International Tradeport. The city has countless commercial outlets, restaurants, services and entertainment venues, guaranteeing that when you’re in Rochester, you’re never too far from anything. Community spirit runs high in this busy little city, as do strong family values and old New England traditions. Rochester residents enjoy the big city feel with the small town heart – classic New England through and through. Finding something to do in Rochester is a snap. The Lilac City offers boating, camping, theaters, fine dining, bowling, historical tours, museums, family parks, sporting events and much, much more. With Dover right next door and Portsmouth just beyond that, you’ll be hard-pressed to find yourself with nothing to do. And the thousands of blooming lilacs in the springtime are something not to be missed. Rochester operates all its own schools in School Administrative Unit #54. In all, there are eight elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. There are no current plans to expand the school system in the near future.
