Northwood, New Hampshire The town of Northwood, New Hampshire sits in the northernmost part of the state’s heavily wooded Rockingham County. Close to the state capital of Concord, Northwood’s 4000 residents enjoy the convenience of the nearby city while relishing the tranquility of Northwood’s quiet neighborhoods as well as its slow paced lifestyle. The first settlers to break ground in what would become Northwood arrived in 1763. Ten years later, Governor John Wentworth incorporated the town when a large area of land known as “The North Woods” was separated from Nottingham, NH. In the early 1800’s, the Portsmouth/Concord turnpike (now Route 4) was constructed through Northwood and several taverns and inns were built to accommodate passengers on the stagecoaches and, in the winter months, the sleds that came through town. With plenty of waterpower available, many mills sprang up, most of them processing lumber. Some of those mills were converted to shoe factories for a short time before closing their doors altogether. Today the town is known as a peaceful vacation spot for those looking to escape the dreary city life. With upwards of nine ponds and lakes in Northwood, it’s no wonder people vacation here. Naturally, Northwood offers plenty in the way of fishing, swimming and boating, but is also known far and wide for it’s antique shops. A section of Route 4 running through town has been dubbed “Antique Alley” for the sheer number of antique shops per mile. If water sports or antiquing is not your idea of fun, perhaps the countless miles of hiking, biking and cross-country skiing are more to your liking. For a more highbrow experience, Northwood offers a center for the performing arts as well as a museum showcasing the town’s and the state’s history. Organized youth sports are plentiful in Northwood and include baseball, basketball, football and hockey. There is seasonal camping available as well as overnight and day camps specifically for children. Northwood is not far from Lake Winnipesaukee or the White Mountains. Portsmouth and the New Hampshire seacoast is only about a half hour’s drive east and Manchester about a half hour southwest. Northwood is equidistant from both the Pease International Tradeport and the Manchester Airport, so travel by air is but a half hour in either direction. Northwood is a part of School Administrative Unit #44 and operates its own elementary school and its own middle school. High school students are tuitioned at the Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, a semi-private school located in town. Northwood needs to be experienced in order to understand the feeling one gets just from being there.
