Northfield, New Hampshire Directly south of the lakes region in central New Hampshire is Northfield, a large but sparsely populated town of just under 5000. Northfield is a hard-working, blue-collar community that has traditional New England values and a strong sense of family embedded in the heavily wooded neighborhoods that are tucked into the surrounding countryside. Before there was a Northfield, NH there was Canterbury, NH. Canterbury was a large, sprawling community with residents scattered from one end to the other. Due to the great distance many people had to travel to attend town meetings or church services, a group of citizens petitioned the state for their parish to become its own town. They were granted township and incorporated in 1780. Most residents were farmers, hunters or tradesmen since there was little in the way of rushing water available to power mills. Since that time, the farms have all but died out and most residents have since turned to other means of income. Today, Northfield has several large manufacturing companies that supply literally hundreds of jobs to area residents. Northfield is yet another of New Hampshire’s wonderful out-of-the-way towns that, if you blink as you ride through, you might miss. Even with a handful of larger companies in town, the natural beauty of central New Hampshire has not been compromised and Northfield still maintains its small town charm. There’s plenty to do in Northfield, provided you enjoy appreciating and/or spending time outdoors. Very close to ski resorts and several campgrounds, residents can take part in outdoor activities all year ‘round. Skiing, swimming, boating, hiking, ice fishing, snowmobiling – Northfield is an outdoorsman’s (and outdoorswoman’s) paradise. With Winnisquam Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee both within ten minutes of your front door, the watersports never end. And the White Mountain National Forest is under forty-five minutes north – well worth several trips throughout the year. Northfield, NH is a part of School Administrative Unit # 59, the Winnisquam Regional School District, along with the neighboring towns of Tilton and Sanbornton. All three towns share the responsibility of educating resident children with three elementary schools, one middle school and a high school. If you enjoy fresh water outdoor activities, Northfield may be the perfect town in which to purchase your new home. From Northfield to Nelson to Newmarket, the beautiful Granite State has something to offer everyone.
