Newmarket, New Hampshire

Newmarket, New Hampshire is a small town of about 10,000 located in north-central Rockingham County.  A bedroom community with only a small amount of commercial and industrial growth, Newmarket is a classic New England town with tightly-knit neighborhoods and a top-notch school system.  For young and old alike, Newmarket is the only town to call home.

Newmarket was one of several towns originally granted by Massachusetts.  Starting its existence as a northern parish of Exeter, the town was incorporated in 1727 and granted full town privileges in 1737.  Likely named for Newmarket in Suffolk, England, the town was fortunate enough to have the Lamprey River running through it, supplying waterpower for the many textile mills that were to come.  Thanks to the river, Newmarket became a center of trade between New England and the West Indies.  The southern parish of Newmarket, Newfields Village, separated from the town and was incorporated as Newfields in 1895.

Newmarket is centrally located between Exeter and Portsmouth giving Newmarket residents easy access to shopping, dining and the theater.  Newmarket has several municipal parks and organized youth sports including baseball, basketball and soccer.  Newmarket has a large recreation center and offers summer day camp for school age children in this town and the surrounding communities.  Newmarket is popular for swimming, canoeing and kayaking the Lamprey River as well as the Rockingham Country Golf Club Course and the Great Bay Athletic Club.  With the college town of Durham bordering to the north, Newmarket is the temporary home for many college students during the school year, so it’s not unusual to see small groups of educated young people drinking coffee and discussing current events in front of the quaint shops on Main Street.  Newmarket has an air all its own, one that the residents are very proud of and most certainly don’t want to change.

Newmarket is a part of School Administrative Unit #31 and maintains it’s own school system.  Students in grades one through five attend the Newmarket Elementary School, while grades six through twelve attend the Newmarket Junior/Senior High School.  At this time there are no neighboring towns tuitioning their students in Newmarket.
