Moultonborough, New Hampshire

The town of Moultonborough, New Hampshire, lies just at the northern tip of Lake Winnipesaukee, the state’s largest body of water.  With a population of about 5000 people, the town is not a small one and has many businesses with which to employ its residents.  However, much of the town’s income is directly related to its year-round tourist trade involving the lake, the mountains and the myriad of activities that can be enjoyed within.

In 1748 a group of settlers from Hampton, NH, petitioned the Masonian Proprietors for a tract of unsettled land north of Lake Winnipesaukee.  The territory was granted in 1763 and the group became the first to make the area home.  The settlers included six Moulton families, led by Colonel Jonathan Moulton for whom the town was named.  Moultonborough was incorporated in 1777.

Today, Moultonborough enjoys a good tourism trade with many people coming specifically to visit the spectacular Castle In The Clouds.  The castle was created by Thomas Gustave Plant, a shoe baron who purchased 6300 acres of land in Moultonborough with the plan to build a large stone castle amidst the rolling hills and mountains of central New Hampshire.  Completed in 1914, the castle was named Lucknow and today stands a one of New Hampshire’s most popular Lakes Region tourist attractions.  Views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the entire area are simply amazing and draw crowds from miles around.

Moultonborough is not a tourist trap, however, it is a wonderful community of caring people who are quick with a smile and a “good morning”.  The town offers residents and visitors alike fine dining as well as fast food, great shopping opportunities and scenic vistas that will take your breath away.  Moultonborough also offers camping, hiking, swimming, skiing, bicycle trails, boating and much, much more.  Any time of the year is a great time of the year to be in Moultonborough, New Hampshire.
