Milton, New Hampshire

Milton, New Hampshire is a small town located on the Maine border just north of Rochester.  With residents totaling only about 4500, this 34-square mile town offers wide open spaces with plenty of room to breathe and move about.  Milton is a town with little industry but a strong sense of community spirit and a generous nature.  When you’re in Milton, you’re home.

Originally a part of Rochester to the south, the Milton area was first settled in 1760.  Known then as “Three Ponds” or “Milton Mills”, the parish was too far from the Rochester church and meeting house for residents to travel – nearly twenty miles.  Residents petitioned for the parish to become its own township, a request that was granted in 1802.  Milton was so-named either for a friend of the colonial Governor Wentworth (Viscount Milton) or simply a contraction of “Mill Town”.

Milton is now a simple bedroom community with little commercial growth.  Many Rochester and Dover commuters choose to live in Milton for its exquisite natural beauty and for the uncrowded feel that the town offers.  Milton is convenient to Rochester, Dover, Portsmouth, Concord and Maine by way of several state highways that run through or closely past it.  One of those highways is the Spaulding Turnpike which leads from Portsmouth all the way up into the White Mountain National Forest, less than one hour north.

Quiet and serene, Milton is the perfect hometown for those who enjoy spending time in the great outdoors.  Boating, biking, hiking and fishing are only a few of the activities available in this sleepy little town.  And if it’s not available in Milton, you’ll most certainly find it right down the street in Rochester.  Out of the way, yet sensibly convenient, Milton could just be the perfect little town you’ve been searching for.

With an eye toward the future, Milton has constructed and now maintains its own school system, from kindergarten through twelfth grade.  With its small student population, there are no current plans to construct additional schools or expand the ones now in use.

Milton is a great place to start a family or retire in quiet comfort.  If you’re looking to buy a home in New England, New Hampshire should be your first choice and Jim Miller should be your first call.  At Jim Miller Bean Group, we’re here to help you learn about our state and all its wonderful offerings.  Just call (603) 801-3987 and get the balling rolling right now.
