Milford, New Hampshire Located in central Hillsborough County, Milford, New Hampshire is an industrious little town of just over 15,000 people and is one of the youngest southern New Hampshire towns, not incorporating until 1794. Bustling with commerce and industry, Milford has managed to keep its small-town feel while capitalizing on its broad economic base. A small park known as The Oval, denotes the town's center and features the brick Bicentennial Walkway as well as a bandstand. Milford, New Hampshire began its life as part of Amherst, Hollis and Lyndeborough. Finally incorporated in 1794, the town focused on textiles until, in the mid 1800's, their first steam sawmill opened. Sitting so near the Souhegan River, Milford has utilized that river's power to feed the industries growing needs. With the arrival of the steam powered sawmill came local furniture producers and a reputation for superior New England goods. Shipping products up and down the Merrimack River, the name Milford quickly became synonymous with quality. Today Milford is a thriving community with a mix of commercial, industrial but mostly residential areas. Keeping with its small-town feel, restrictions have been put into place to govern the town's growth; however, many residents of surrounding communities work in Milford due to its strong commercial and industrial influence on the area. Milford sits just northwest of Nashua and just southwest of Manchester, so it is central to many activities. Milford itself offers boating, biking, hiking, fishing, several restaurants, cinemas, bowling and centers for the performing arts. With easy access to the highway, Boston is just an hour south and the White Mountain National Forest just an hour north. With all the comforts and conveniences you could ever want, Milford, New Hampshire is a wonderful community in which to raise a family. The Milford, New Hampshire School District, SAU #40, maintains grades one through twelve and includes a preschool program as well as a kindergarten. The Jacques Memorial and Heron Pond Elementary Schools facilitate preschool and kindergarten through grades five. The Milford Middle School provides for grades six through eight and the award-winning Milford High School educates students in grades nine through twelve. The Milford School district offers many extracurricular activities for its students as well as several youth athletic groups.
