Jaffrey, New Hampshire

Jaffrey, New Hampshire is an industrious little southern NH town located just a few miles over the Massachusetts border.  Loved by the 6000 or so residents that inhabit it, Jaffrey is the quintessential New England town: quiet yet busy, historical yet modern.  Jaffrey is a great town in which to raise a family or retire in peace, quiet and convenience.

Jaffrey was one in a line of territories chartered to protect the eastern part of New Hampshire from Indian attack.  Designated “Monadnock Number 2” in 1749, it was one of the first towns established on unclaimed land under the Masonian Proprietor’s original claim.  The developing settlement, sometimes referred to as Middletown or Middle Monadnock, was incorporated as Jaffrey in 1773, so-named for George Jaffrey, a prominent figure in Portsmouth, NH.

Farming, hunting, and trapping were the primary means of support for many families in town, though around the mid-1800’s.  The stunning natural beauty of the area prompted the development of several hotels and the town of Jaffrey soon became a vacation destination for those who could afford to stay there.  For those who couldn’t afford the extravagant cost of staying in a top-notch hotel, many cottages and campgrounds sprung up in and around Jaffrey allowing the masses to enjoy the tranquil beauty that IS southern New Hampshire.  Today Jaffrey still offers the scenic wonders that drew crowds over a hundred and fifty years ago and boasts several inns, hotels, and campgrounds for visitors to enjoy.

Those who live here, however, know that the true beauty of Jaffrey is its people.  Friendly and courteous, always quick with a wave or a smile, Jaffrey residents will welcome you as their own, even if you’re just visiting for a day.  If you purchase a home in Jaffrey, you instantly become part of a 6000-person family, with all the perks and benefits thereof.  Nearly half of the working residents who live in Jaffrey, also work in Jaffrey, making for a rather speedy commute.  And the nearby proximity of Keene and Peterborough only make living in Jaffrey all the more convenient.

Jaffrey is a member of SAU #47 and a part of the Jaffrey-Rindge Cooperative.  The Jaffrey Grade School caters to Jaffrey students from kindergarten through grade five.  All other students from Jaffrey and students from Rindge attend the Jaffrey-Rindge Middle School or the Conant High School, both located in Jaffrey.
