Hillsborough, New Hampshire At the northernmost point of Hillsborough County in southern New Hampshire lies the town of Hillsborough. With a population of about 5500, Hillsborough is a growing town that still manages to hang on to its New England roots. With four state routes converging in this quiet community, Hillsborough has easy access to the larger nearby cities of Concord, Keene and Manchester yet maintains the sense of peace and tranquility that permeates this town. First granted in 1735 by Massachusetts Governor Jonathan Belcher as one of nine towns designed to defend against Indian attacks, the area to become Hillsborough was simply known as Number 7. After New Hampshire became its own province in 1741, the town became a part of the land owned by the Masonian Proprietors of Portsmouth. The Proprietors granted the already settled land and in 1748 the town was named Hillsborough by Governor Belcher in honor of Sir Will Hills, Earl of Hillsborough. The town was finally incorporated by New Hampshire Governor John Wentworth in 1772. Hillsborough is the birthplace of Franklin Pierce, the only president to have come from New Hampshire. Located about twenty miles from the state capital of Concord, Hillsborough is far from the hustle and bustle of big-city life. That’s not to say there is nothing to do in Hillsborough – far from it. The area is full of lakes, ponds and streams and offers plenty of opportunities for fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing and more. Hillsborough boasts outdoor tennis courts, biking and hiking trails, camping, snowmobile trails and a beautiful municipal park. There are planned activities for the children including organized youth sports such as baseball, soccer, basketball and hockey. While Hillsborough has a Shaw’s grocery store, an Osco drug store and several small stores and shops, the town refuses to bend under the weight of the monster-store conglomerates such as Wal-Mart, Home Depot or BJ’s Wholesale. For these superstores, you’ll need to travel to Concord, Keene or one of the other nearby towns that do cater to these giants. Hillsborough refuses to abandon the quaint New England charm its resident have come to cherish. Hillsborough is a part of SAU# 34 and the Hillsboro-Deering Cooperative along with neighboring Deering, NH. All three Cooperative schools are located in Hillsborough with Deering students being bussed in daily. Hillsborough is classic New England through and through.
