Sixteen years later the town was incorporated by Governor John Wentworth in honor of Sir John Henniker, a popular London merchant who did a great deal of business is Portsmouth, NH. Henniker, New Hampshire is the only town in existence so-named. With the great power supplied by the Contoocook River, many mills sprung up in Henniker and the town became a producer of textiles, lumber and more. Unfortunately, in 1959, the Hopkinton-Everett Lakes Flood Control Project put these mills out of business with the construction of several dams. Today Henniker is a quiet bedroom community that offers residents a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, skiing, camping and white-water sports. Henniker’s central location in New Hampshire allows for quick and easy travel throughout the entire state. Interstate Route 93 lies only fifteen minutes east and allows for short drives north, to the scenic White Mountains, or south toward historic Boston. Just a bit south on I-93 brings you to east-west Route 101 which will lead you east to the beaches, or west toward the southwestern portion of the state and the cities of Nashua and Keene. With I-89 nearby, Vermont is less than an hour away. Location is everything and Henniker has a great one. Henniker, NH is a part of School Administrative Unit # 24 and educates resident students from kindergarten age up to the eighth grade. High school age Henniker students are tuitioned at the John Stark Regional High School in nearby Weare, NH. Homes are available for purchase in Henniker.
