Hancock, New Hampshire Deep in the southern New Hampshire woods lies the tiny burg of Hancock, NH. With residents numbering around 1800, this little town may be small in population, but it is very big on charm and rich in New England history. Now a bedroom community for Manchester and Keene commuters, Hancock has a style and a feel all its own and prides itself on being a safe town with strong family values – the ideal place to raise your children. Hancock was once a part of neighboring Peterborough. Disgruntled residents decided to split off from the town and form their own community. They named their village Hancock in honor of founding father John Hancock and the town was incorporated in 1779. Settlers began hunting and fishing the area and eventually cleared out the heavily wooded forests for growing crops and raising livestock. The thick woods became farmland and, along with several mills powered by small local streams, managed to maintain the community for over a hundred years until the topsoil was depleted and the advent of the automobile allowed residents to work outside of Hancock. Walking down the main street of Hancock, NH is like walking through the past. Most of the buildings in the town’s center are the original ones built in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Many are still being used for businesses or residences and all are listed with the National Registry of Historical Places. And while Hancock doesn’t have the shopping malls and busy streets of the city, there is still plenty to do. Crotched Mountain Ski Area is just a stone’s throw away in neighboring Bennington, NH, there are countless streams and ponds for fishing, swimming, boating and ice skating, miles upon miles of hiking, bicycling and snowmobile trails and still plenty of woods for hunting. The lakes region and the White Mountains lie to the north while the always exciting New Hampshire seacoast lies an hour or so due east. The nearby cities of Keene, Manchester and Nashua can supply Hancock residents with any amenity the large city has to offer. When you live in Hancock, you’re far enough from the bright city lights that sleep comes easy, but not too far that you can’t reach the city inside twenty minutes. Hancock, NH shares its membership in the SAU#1 Contoocook Valley Cooperative with Antrim, Dublin, Francestown, Greenfield, Peterborough, Sharon and Temple. Hancock has its own elementary school, teaching resident children from kindergarten through the fourth grade. Hancock students in grades five through eight go to the Great Brook Middle School in Antrim and grades nine through twelve attend Contoocook Valley Regional Regional High School in Peterborough.
