Greenland, New Hampshire

Greenland, New Hampshire is a growing seacoast town with about 4000 residents.  Located just south of historic Portsmouth, Greenland is conveniently located with quick and easy access to routes 1, 33 and 95 lending to short travel times and ease of commute.  Greenland is only a few minutes from the coastline, a few minutes from the neighboring state of Maine and only a few minutes from the Pease International Tradeport.

Greenland was one of the first settled areas in the state.  First a parish of Portsmouth, the land was purchased as a farm by Captain Francis Champernowne and named “Greenland”.  As more settlers took up residence on the land, they petitioned to become a separate parish, which was granted in 1706.  Fifteen years later, the residents petitioned and were granted their own township, incorporating in the same year.  In the early and mid 1800’s, Greenland successfully annexed land from neighboring Stratham in an effort to expand its boundaries.  Greenland remained a farming community for over two hundred years and today is home to the oldest brick house still standing in New Hampshire.

For those with a penchant for outdoor activities, Greenland is home to a golf course and outdoor tennis courts.  If you’re a true golf nut, there are at least six more golf courses within twenty minutes of Greenland’s center.  Greenland has organized youth sports including baseball, basketball and football as well as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and a 4H Club.  Greenland, with its heavily wooded forests, is also a great place for hunters and sportsman to call home.  Route I-95 runs through the heart of Greenland and offers residents quick and easy access to destinations both north and south.  Just north of Greenland is the Spaulding Turnpike which leads travelers north to the White Mountains and all their majestic scenery – and living in Greenland can have you there in about one hour.

Greenland is a part of School Administrative Unit #50 and operates its own school for children in grades one through eight, the Greenland Central School.  Greenland students in grades nine through twelve are tuitioned at the Portsmouth High School and there are no current plans to build a high school in town.
