Greenfield, New Hampshire The quaint New England town of Greenfield sits in the central part of Hillsborough County in southern New Hampshire. Though this small town’s population has nearly doubled in the past twenty-five years to almost 1800 people, Greenfield remains a quiet, sleepy little bedroom community with no plans to change the status quo. With little commercial or industrial interests in town, Greenfield prides itself in the ability to hang on to its quaint New England charm and tranquil atmosphere. Originally settled by the Lynde family in 1753, the area was first referred to as the “Lyndeborough Addition”. The schools and churches of Lyndeborough proper were difficult for those in “the Addition” to reach due to the Monadnock Hills which sat between the two. In 1791, Lyndeborough Addition resident petitioned and won the right to form their own town. They decided on the name Greenfield to indicate the fertile, level land the town was formed on. With little to no waterpower available, residents were primarily farmers who tilled the fertile soil for nearly two hundred years until the farms started petering out and the town slowly became the bedroom community that it is today. Greenfield is probably best known for the Crotched Mountain Foundation, a rehabilitation center in operation there since 1936. The Crotched Mountain Foundation offers rehabilitation therapy for children and adults and helps families cope with debilitating injuries and illnesses. Another well-known draw to the area is the Greenfield State Park and Campground. This large 257-site campground allows for swimming, fishing and hiking and acts as a home base for hikers looking to tackle nearby Mount Monadnock. Greenfield State Park boasts 900 feet of waterfront beach access exclusively for campers, kayak and canoe rentals, showers, a dump station and a general store. Greenfield is located almost exactly halfway between Manchester and Nashua, each about fifteen miles away, but is very close to Peterborough, a bustling little town of over 6100 people. Skiing is very popular in this region with several ski areas within a half hour drive of Greenfield, the closest of which if Crotched Mountain Ski Resort. Greenfield’s school system is a part of SAU #1, and Greenfield maintains its own elementary school, the Greenfield Elementary School. All other students attend the Contoocook Valley Cooperative, along with the nearby towns of Bennington, Antrim, Francestown, Dublin, Hancock, Temple, Sharon and Peterborough. With Greenfield’s small student population, there are no current plans to build additional schools within the town. Greenfield is a town with classic New England written all over it.
