Eaton, New Hampshire What setting could be more perfect than a tiny town of less than 500 people tucked in the towering mountains of New Hampshire’s North Country? That’s what you’ll find when you enter Eaton, NH, a little community located just five miles south of the popular tourist destination of Conway. Eaton has little business and little interest in gaining more – the residents of this town prefer the solitude and tranquility of living in a “forgotten village”. Far from forgotten, though, Eaton is a beautiful town and a great place to raise a family or retire in peace, quiet and natural beauty. Eaton was chartered to Clement March and several others in 1766. The town was named for Connecticut Governor Theophilus Eaton, a successful London merchant who contributed large sums of money in 1630 to help settle Massachusetts. He later went on to fund a colony at New Haven, CT, with the great-grandfather of the founder of Yale University as well as govern Connecticut for 19 years. The town’s village of Snowville was named for the Snow family, an enterprising group who founded one of the first sawmills in town. Eaton’s development was slow through the years and most businesses failed after a time. In the mid 1920’s, Camp Waukeela, a summer camp for girls, was opened on Crystal Lake in Eaton. The camp remains open today carrying on a legacy of summer fun and lasting memories. The largest town near Eaton is Conway, with its sister-town of North Conway just a few minutes up the road. Shopping and entertainment can easily be found in either of these two beautiful communities and neither is more than a few minutes from Eaton. But the largest attractor to the area is the stunning New Hampshire countryside and the majestic Appalachian Mountains in the White Mountain National Forest. Pristine waters flow from the mountains, cascading down waterfalls and into the cold, clear streams and rivers of the area. Picturesque scenes greet you at every turn with thick green forests sprawling out for miles on end. Crisp, clean mountain air and the sounds of birds fill the mornings – this region has been described as “magical”, a word that still doesn’t do justice to this part of the state. Eaton, NH, is a member of School Administrative unit #9, the Conway School District. Eaton has no schools of its own and sends all school-age children to Conway for their education.
