The Coldwell Banker legacy began in 1906 when Colbert Coldwell realized the need for honest, knowledgeable, trustworthy real estate agents in the Bay Area after the renowned San Francisco earthquake. Coldwell saw unscrupulous sales associates taking advantage of sellers in vulnerable positions then turning around reselling properties at huge profits. Colbert Coldwell and two partners, Tucker and Lynch, created their own real estate firm with the deeply held belief that hard work and honesty will get you further in the real estate business than lies and deception – a sentiment that has not been lost to time.
In 1913, Benjamin Banker joined their agency as a salesman and Coldwell quickly learned that Banker and he shared many of the same values, including integrity and professionalism. The following year, Banker was made a partner and the two remained active in the business for the remainder of their lives. The firm of Coldwell Banker began its national expansion in the 1920’s opening additional offices in southern California, then again in the 1950’s and 60’s by opening branches in Phoenix, Arizona and Seattle, Washington.
By the early 90’s, Coldwell Banker had offices in all fifty U.S. states and began reaching out to the international market, starting with Canada and Puerto Rico. The company decided to concentrate specifically on residential properties and sold off the Coldwell Banker Commercial Group, now known as CB Commercial. With Coldwell Banker’s laser-sharp focus on residential properties, agents are freed up and without the distraction of commercial interests so they can help residential buyers and sellers move real estate.
Today, Coldwell Banker has thousands of offices throughout the United States and other countries, tens of thousands of listings available, and does billions of dollars in sales each year.
