Canterbury, New Hampshire Just south of the central part of the Granite State, you will find Canterbury, New Hampshire, a small, unassuming town of about 2300 residents. Located only a few miles north of the state capital, Concord, Canterbury is a quiet, classic New England style town that exudes traditional, old-fashioned family values and a sense of days long since passed. Residents in this friendly little town are quick with a smile and a wave to everyone, so it doesn’t take long to become a “part of the family” when you purchase a home here in Canterbury. Incorporated in 1741, Canterbury was named in honor of William Wake, the Archbishop of Canterbury, England. First granted in 1727, the town was created as a fort/trading post used to protect inhabitants from unfriendly Indian attacks while also trading with the friendlier Penacook Indian tribes that also lived in the area. In 1792 the Canterbury Shaker Village was created as an autonomous community within Canterbury proper by the United Society of Believers. The US of B members were known locally as “Shakers”, due to their enthusiastic dancing during worship. The Canterbury Shaker Village still exists today as a living museum. It is registered as a National Historic Landmark and draws crowds far and wide, much as the Amish do down in Pennsylvania Dutch country. Residing just 15 miles north of Concord, Canterbury is not far from all the conveniences of the city, but far enough that the only noise you hear is that of the wind blowing lightly through the pines and the occasional cry of a Blue Jay. Canterbury is off the beaten path and that’s the way it’s going to stay. The fact that Interstate Route 93 is just a couple of miles west of the town center doesn’t diminish the town’s quiet character, it only enhances the ability to get into the city all the quicker. Canterbury has a few small businesses, but primarily it’s a bedroom community with an eye on retaining its quaint, tranquil environment. Aside from the Shaker Village, another of Canterbury’s strong draws is the Canterbury Woods Country Club, a fully loaded 18-hole golf course created by master golf course designer, Ross Forbes. The stunning 34 acres force no blind shots while the fairways and the greens are manicured to perfection. Play one round and you’ll soon be purchasing a house in beautiful Canterbury, NH. Canterbury is a member of School Administrative Unit #80 and maintains its own elementary school, the aptly named Canterbury Elementary School. Students in middle school are sent to the neighboring Belmont Middle School, while high school students in Canterbury are educated at the Belmont High School. There are no plans in the works to build either a middle or high school in Canterbury at this time.
