Boscawen, New Hampshire

The sleepy little town of Boscawen, New Hampshire is another fine example of a classic New England town at its finest.  Blink as you drive through and you’ll miss most of Boscawen and its nearly 4000 residents – all of whom are perfectly happy with their town being so easily overlooked.  Tranquil settings and the serene sounds of nature are what Boscawen is known for and the townsfolk wouldn’t have it any other way.

Boscawen began its existence as a land grant in 1732.  At that time it was called Contoocook, after the nearby Contoocook River.  Because of continuing Indian attacks, the Contoocook Fort was constructed beside the Merrimack River in 1739.  When the town was finally incorporated in 1760, it was also renamed in honor of British Admiral Edward Boscawen.  The admiral was responsible for capturing the fortress at Louisbourg in Nova Scotia.

The town of Boscawen had a few small mills in operation for a time, but the larger mill towns just to the south were too much competition for the small town’s entrepreneurs.  Farming was the most common form of support for a hundred and fifty years, but in time the farms faded and Boscawen became primarily a bedroom community for commuters working in the state capital of Concord, just down the road.

Peace and quiet are the order of the day in Boscawen, an order that the town’s residents are pleased to follow.  While Boscawen is basically a small, quaint little town, it does have its share of business and industry.  A few small service-oriented shops, a couple of nice restaurants and even several manufacturing businesses can be found in town.  Boscawen keeps the kids in mind as well with organized youth groups and sports such as baseball and soccer.  Boscawen has an outdoor tennis facility and plenty of forest trails to hike, bike or ride horses in.  Fishing, canoeing, kayaking and swimming are also very popular, due to the town’s location near the clean Merrimack River and beautiful Walker Pond.  Boscawen is not far from Concord or even Manchester, so all the trappings of the city can be taken advantage of without having to actually live there.  Routes I-93 and 89 and 101 are all only a short drive away making traveling throughout the state a breeze.

School age Boscawen children attend the School Administrative Unit #46 and are a part of the Merrimack Valley Regional School District.  Students of kindergarten age up to grade five are educated at the Boscawen Elementary School while the remainder of the resident students attend the Merrimack Valley Regional Middle School or the Merrimack Valley Regional High School, both in nearby Penacook, NH.  With its small student population, Boscawen has no plans to build a middle or high school in the near future.

If you’re looking for a place where you can “get away from it all”, look no further, you’ve found your new home.  And if Boscawen doesn’t fit your needs, there are the countless other classic New England towns and cities in our wonderful state in which to purchase a new home.  Before you make any decision, you should first call (603) 801-3987 and speak to Jim Miller of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.  Make that call today and be living the New Hampshire dream sooner than you might think.
