Bennington, New Hampshire

The tiny town of Bennington, NH is located almost exactly between the sprawling megalopolis of Manchester, NH and the active college town of Keene.  Sporting a population of less than 1500 residents, Bennington is one of the smallest towns New Hampshire has to offer yet it retains its own vital history as well as modern-day attractions.  Quiet, tree-lined roads weave through the heavily wooded but lightly populated neighborhoods.  A serene atmosphere and small-town values help make Bennington, NH a prime location to raise family.

First settled in 1753, the area to become Bennington was then known as "Society Land".  The town itself was created using parts of Deering, Francestown, Greenfield and Hancock and was named in order to commemorate the 1777 "Battle of Bennington", fought just outside Bennington, Vermont.  Bennington, Vermont was itself named in honor of the colonial governor Benning Wentworth.  The town was finally incorporated in 1842 and went on to become an important mill town, producing grain, textiles (both cotton and wool), tanned leather products, tools and paper.  To this day the Monadnock Paper Mill maintains the honor of being the largest single-family-owned paper mill in the country.

Bennington, though small, has one of the state's more popular winter activity destinations: Crotched Mountain Ski Area.  With five lifts and dozens of trails, Crotched Mountain is one of the furthest south ski areas in New Hampshire, making it very appealing to those living in southern NH or neighboring Massachusetts.  In addition to skiing and snowboarding, Bennington offers many small shops and restaurants, much as you would expect from a small resort town.  The large chain stores haven't been allowed into Bennington in an effort to maintain the quaint New England setting its residents know and love so much.  If there's a need for a large chain store or supermarket, Hillsborough is a short ride north or Peterborough, which sits just south of Bennington, should have what you need.  If not, Manchester, the state's largest city lies thirty minutes east and Keene even closer to the west.  Seacoast entertainment is less than forty minutes beyond Manchester and the lakes region with huge Lake Winnipesaukee is about an hour north of Bennington.

Bennington, NH is a part of SAU#1, along with Antrim, Dublin, Francestown, Greenfield, Hancock, Peterborough, Sharon and Temple.  Bennington runs its own elementary school and sends students in grades five through eight to Great Brook Elementary and students in grades nine through twelve to Contoocook Valley High School.  Due to its small size, Bennington has no plans to change the current schooling arrangement.

If you're a skier, Bennington probably sounds like heaven to you - and it is, even if you don't ski.  This town has the classic New England feel to it and its residents are intent on keeping it that way.  If this sounds like the home town you've been looking for, pick up your phone and call Jim Miller Bean Group at (603) 801-3987 to find out more about what homes are available in this perfect little community.  And if Bennington isn't your idea of perfection, tell us what is and we'll find the perfect home to suit your needs.  New Hampshire has it all - call today to find out how easily you can be a part of it.
