Belmont, New Hampshire

Belmont, New Hampshire, is an industrious little town of about 7500 people located in southern Belknap County.  Set in the lakes region of the Granite State, Belmont is surrounded with ponds and lakes, both large and small, and rivers and streams, both powerful and trickling.  Another one of New Hampshire’s “sportsman’s paradises”, Belmont offers it residents rolling hills in thickly wooded forests and wide-open fields while still maintaining a modern feel through convenient businesses strategically located throughout the community.  Grocery stores, restaurants, hardware stores, mini-malls and several entertainment venues keep the material and cultural needs of the populace satisfied while the tranquil surroundings of pristine lakes and towering mountain ranges give them the serenity that’s been lost in so many towns today.  Belmont is a true dichotomy, offering the best of both worlds to residents and visitors alike.

Belmont was just a parish of the much larger town of Gilmanton.  Though chartered in 1727, Belmont, then known as “Upper Gilmanton”, was not officially incorporated until 1859.  Many residents balked at the name because they felt that there were already too many “Gilmantons” and adding another would only confuse people.  Ten years later they petitioned to rename the town “Belmont”, in honor of August Belmont, a prominent businessman from New York.  Their hope was that Mr. Belmont would make a financial contribution to the town, but instead he never even acknowledged the gesture and wound up dying later that same year.

Over the next hundred-or-so years, Belmont residents built their town up with hard work and forward planning.  Today, Belmont businesses employ over a thousand workers from this and surrounding communities, making it a force to be reckoned with in the local economy.  Hard working and inventive, “Belmontians” strive to make their town special and stand out from the crowd – and succeed.  With the best from both the natural beauty of the area and the burgeoning commerce of in-town business, Belmont rises to the top like cream in milk and must be experienced to be appreciated.

Belmont is a member of SAU #81 and part of the Shaker Regional School District, along with Canterbury.  Belmont operates all its own schools within town lines, which include the Belmont Elementary, Belmont Middle and Belmont High Schools.  Canterbury students are tuitioned to the Belmont Middle and High Schools, as they have only an elementary school of their own.
